I read recently that the key to happiness is making meaning in life. To decide that something is special, sacred, important. For many, this may be religion, or a moral compass, or a profession. It is likely family, friendships, and personal growth.
These are the big things. But I think there are a thousand tiny things that buoy us every single day, that remind us of our humanity and the humanity in others. That warm our hearts, make us feel like we are part of a wholeβlike a tiny joy will help get us through long work days, tough seasons of life, and everything in between.
So, here are a few of my tiny meaning-makers: things that I find important, special, sacred. The things that get me though.
Making small talk with strangers and seeing just a glimmer of their personality.
Always saying thank you, even for the little things.
Actually being silly with your kids.
Taking a deep breath when your kids frustrate you and staying calm. Holding onto your cool.
Making eye contact!
When the idea youβre trying to express actually comes together into words on the page seamlessly, (almost) flawlessly.
Throwing together a satisfying pantry meal with only the odds and ends on hand.
The first snow of the season.
A thoughtfully, intentionally, slowly decorated home. A love letter to your family.
Loving a new song so much you canβt stop listening to it.
Coffee with a good friend you havenβt seen in a while.
Being brave enough to speak your mind (be yourself) even when you are uncertain of what others might think.
Not not caring what others think (because that is impossible), but not caring too much.
November, pre-holidays: appreciating the cozy cocoon of darkness by 5:30 pm and the calm before the holidays.
What are your tiny meaning makers?
